Italian startup Ephos raises $8.5 million in seed funding to construct a dedicated research and manufacturing facility near Milan. Backed by NATO, the European government, and other key investors, the company focuses on producing the world's first glass-based quantum photonic circuits. Theoretical physicist and CEO Andrea Rocchetto founds the company to address a critical gap in both geographic talent and technological hardware capabilities.

Current computational infrastructure experiences severe strain from the heavy workloads of artificial intelligence and emerging quantum computing technologies. In the U.S. alone, data centers consume approximately 9% of the country's generated energy, creating an urgent demand for faster and more efficient processors. Rocchetto believes that photonics and quantum computing provide the answer to these massive energy and performance challenges by utilizing light to process data.

Ephos distinguishes itself from other photonic competitors like Xanadu and Orca by specifically focusing on building chips out of glass fiber optics. While traditional silicon approaches dominate the current market, this glass-based design promises a more efficient way to transfer data. The startup ultimately aims to shatter the existing market for AI and quantum chips by delivering a fundamentally superior and more sustainable hardware solution.
