Investors, including Sky Dayton and Craft Ventures, show strong confidence in this unique approach to connecting embedded devices globally.
The startup builds a low-bandwidth, latency-tolerant network that provides extremely inexpensive and low-power data transmission for IoT sensors. These devices often operate in remote areas like farms or wildernesses where traditional cellular or Wi-Fi networks fail to reach. Because IoT data typically does not require immediate delivery, Swarm's delayed but reliable space-based connectivity offers an ideal solution for monitoring soil, tracking wildlife, and managing off-grid assets.
The new funding directly supports the rapid expansion of Swarm's orbital footprint over the next 18 months. The company already tests seven satellites in space and considers its hardware design completely finalized. Because the SpaceBEE devices are remarkably small, Swarm plans to launch dozens at a time to quickly establish its network while navigating the necessary regulatory approvals and manufacturing schedules.
