Synapse Raises $6M to Bring Neural Net Weapon Detection to X-Ray Machines

Synapse Technology raises $6 million in seed funding to expand its neural network-powered weapon detection system for existing x-ray machines.

Synapse Technology raises $6 million in a seed round led by Founders Fund, Neo, 8VC, and Village Global to expand its computer vision system. The startup creates a hardware add-on that interfaces with existing x-ray machines to provide neural net-powered weapon detection. This technology serves as a reliable second set of eyes for security workers at critical infrastructure sites like government buildings, schools, and airports.

The AI system significantly improves threat detection, as proven by a pilot program at Tokyo's Narita airport where scanners pull in 14% more prohibited items. To date, Synapse scans more than 5 million bags and even conducts lab tests to identify 3D-printed weapons. The advanced neural networks make it easier to spot dangerous objects hidden behind large electronics, which potentially allows travelers to leave laptops inside their bags during screenings.

Synapse emphasizes that its goal is to assist human security workers rather than replace them. By handling the heavy lifting of visual analysis, the technology reduces fatigue and error rates for operators. As the company moves forward with its new funding, it focuses on scaling its deployments to make security checkpoints faster and safer for everyone.
