Synapse Technology brings artificial intelligence to existing x-ray security machines through a hardware add-on that does not void equipment warranties. The startup's neural network-powered assistant acts as a second set of eyes for human operators who traditionally rely on their own vision to spot threats. By analyzing the scanned items, the software automatically detects high-profile dangers like guns and knives with a much higher degree of accuracy.
The company closes a $6 million seed round led by Founders Fund, Neo, 8VC, and Village Global to expand this technology into critical infrastructure locations such as government buildings and schools. Synapse already runs a successful pilot program at Tokyo's Narita airport, where the AI-assisted scanners pull in 14 percent more prohibited items compared to traditional methods. To date, the startup helps scan more than 5 million bags and actively tests the system to identify 3D-printed weapons in the lab.
Rather than replacing human workers, Synapse aims to reduce their cognitive load so they can perform better. The AI specifically targets severe threats instead of hunting for minor infractions like oversized toiletries, and it easily spots weapons hidden behind large electronics like laptops. The startup plans to use the new funding to deploy its product in more high-security facilities and aggressively ramp up hiring.
