Tech Giants Turn to AI to Improve Data Center Safety and Efficiency
Microsoft and Meta are leveraging artificial intelligence to predict and prevent safety hazards in their data centers, following a similar push by Google. These AI systems analyze operational data to anticipate dangerous conditions and optimize server performance.
Data centers present serious safety hazards for the workers who build and maintain them, including exposure to energized electrical equipment and hazardous chemicals like chlorine. While these facilities are safer than in the past, tech giants like Microsoft and Meta are now exploring how artificial intelligence can proactively prevent these dangerous safety incidents from occurring.
Microsoft develops an AI system that analyzes various data sources to generate alerts for construction and operations teams, aiming to mitigate the impact of safety issues before they happen. Meta takes a similar approach by using physical models to simulate extreme environmental conditions, feeding this data into AI systems that optimize power consumption, cooling, and airflow to prevent unsafe work environments.
Beyond protecting workers, these companies have strong financial motivations to maintain peak data center conditions using AI. By collecting high-frequency sensor data from individual servers and racks, Meta allocates resources efficiently to maximize performance, which helps prevent costly and increasingly frequent service outages.
