Tech Giants Unite to Build Unified Smart Home Standard
Google, Amazon, Apple, and others form a working group to create a single IP-based connectivity standard for smart home devices.
Google, Amazon, Apple, and several other technology companies team up to develop a unified smart home connectivity standard called Connected Home Over IP. The Zigbee Alliance spearheads this new working group to address the current fragmentation in the smart home ecosystem where devices struggle to communicate seamlessly with each other.
Currently, smart home manufacturers navigate a complex web of competing protocols that includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, ZigBee, and Google's own Weave and Thread. While each of these technologies offers distinct advantages, this fragmentation forces equipment makers to invest significant resources just to ensure their products function across different platforms and systems.
The new working group aims to solve this interoperability problem by establishing a single, common standard built on internet protocol (IP). By consolidating around an IP-based foundation, the coalition hopes to simplify the development process for manufacturers while ensuring that smart locks, lights, and speakers work together effortlessly regardless of the brand.
