Tech Giants Unite to Form Agentic AI Foundation and Open-Source MCP

Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI co-found the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) as a directed fund under the Linux Foundation, with additional backing from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare, and Bloomberg. As part of this move, Anthropic officially donates the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the new foundation to ensure the technology remains open-source, community-driven, and vendor-neutral.
MCP experiences massive growth just one year after its introduction as a universal standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. The ecosystem now boasts over 10,000 active public MCP servers, while major platforms like ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot widely adopt the protocol. Enterprise-grade infrastructure support is also available from leading cloud providers like AWS, Cloudflare, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
The protocol continues to evolve rapidly with recent updates bringing asynchronous operations, statelessness, and official extensions. Developers download the official SDKs over 97 million times per month across Python and TypeScript, and Anthropic recently adds Tool Search and Programmatic Tool Calling to its API to optimize large-scale MCP deployments. By placing MCP under the Linux Foundation, these technology companies aim to maintain neutral stewardship and facilitate open collaboration for this critical AI infrastructure.
