Telegram Introduces Slow Mode and Silent Messages for Group Chats
Telegram rolls out a new Slow Mode feature that restricts how often group members can send messages, aiming to make large conversations more orderly. The update also includes a silent sending option and arrives as other messaging platforms attempt to curb misinformation.
Telegram launches a new Slow Mode feature that gives group administrators better control over member engagement by dictating how often users can send messages. Once a member sends a text, they must wait between 30 seconds and an hour before posting again. Telegram says this tool makes large group conversations more orderly and increases the value of each individual message.
This rollout comes as other messaging platforms like WhatsApp grapple with containing the spread of misinformation on their services. WhatsApp previously limited how often users can forward messages, resulting in a significant drop in content virality. Although Telegram is not marketing Slow Mode as an anti-misinformation tool, it naturally slows down the rapid spread of content in groups that can hold up to 200,000 members.
In addition to Slow Mode, Telegram introduces a silent notification option that allows users to send messages without triggering a sound on the recipient's device. Users simply hold the Send button to deliver text or media quietly, providing peace of mind even if the recipient forgets to enable Do Not Disturb mode. The update also includes smaller features like custom admin titles and video scrubbing thumbnails.
