Tesla acquires DeepScale, a Silicon Valley computer vision startup, to improve its Autopilot driver assistance system and advance CEO Elon Musk's goal of launching a robotaxi network. DeepScale develops efficient deep neural networks that operate on small, low-cost, automotive-grade processors to increase the accuracy of a vehicle's perception system. This technology allows cars to understand their surroundings in real time without relying on expensive, high-wattage computing hardware.
Currently, Tesla vehicles operate at Level 2 autonomy, meaning the driver assistance system requires human supervision. By integrating DeepScale's efficient computer vision methods, Tesla aims to push its capabilities closer to Level 4, where the car handles all driving tasks in certain conditions without human intervention. This move supports Musk's ambitious timeline to deploy an autonomous ridesharing network.
Beyond the technology itself, the acquisition addresses a practical need by injecting fresh talent into Tesla's Autopilot team. The self-driving division experiences several high-profile departures over the past year, making the addition of DeepScale's experienced engineers a crucial reset. DeepScale co-founder Forrest Iandola confirms his transition to the Tesla Autopilot team, signaling the immediate start of this new collaboration.
