CEO Elon Musk shares the climbing numbers on social media, showing strong initial consumer interest despite the vehicle's unconventional, angular design. The Cybertruck features cold-rolled steel construction and an adaptive air suspension, though a live demonstration of its armored glass does not go as planned.
Most prospective buyers opt for the higher-tier models instead of the base version. Musk notes that 42 percent of reservations are for the $49,900 dual-motor all-wheel drive variant, while 41 percent choose the top-tier $69,900 tri-motor model that offers over 500 miles of range and 14,000 pounds of towing capacity. Only 17 percent of reservation holders select the cheapest single-motor rear-wheel drive option priced at $39,900.
The futuristic pickup truck divides opinions among critics and Tesla enthusiasts alike. While supporters praise the bold aesthetic, others at the unveiling event express a desire for a more conventional truck design. It remains impossible to predict how many of these $100 deposits will actually convert into final purchases when production of the tri-motor variant begins in late 2022.
