Tesla Cybertruck to Offer Optional Solar Charging Capability
Tesla plans to offer an optional solar charging system for its newly revealed Cybertruck. The setup adds up to 15 miles of range per day, with potential for more using deployable solar wings.
Tesla reveals that its newly unveiled Cybertruck includes plans for an optional solar charging system. CEO Elon Musk shares on Twitter that the pickup's long, angled sides and flat truck bed cover provide an ideal surface for integrating solar panels.
The current solar design generates approximately 15 miles of range per day, which is enough for short daily trips around town. Musk also mentions conceptual "fold out solar wings" that could potentially increase this output to 30 or 40 miles of daily range.
Despite this solar capability, drivers still need traditional plug-in charging for long journeys because solar panels simply are not efficient enough to fully power the vehicle. Tesla has plenty of time to finalize the pricing, design, and availability of this feature before the Cybertruck enters production in late 2021.
