Tesla Overtakes Toyota to Become World's Most Valuable Automaker
Tesla surpasses Toyota in market capitalization despite producing a fraction of the vehicles, highlighting a massive shift in how investors value the future of electric transportation.
Tesla officially overtakes Toyota to become the world's most valuable automaker as its stock surges more than 160% since the start of the year. The electric vehicle pioneer reaches a market capitalization of $207.2 billion, edging past Toyota's $201.9 billion valuation. This milestone highlights a massive shift in investor enthusiasm toward companies focused on transforming the traditional internal combustion engine industry.
Despite this incredible financial milestone, a massive gulf remains between the actual scale of the two companies. Tesla produces only about 103,000 vehicles in the first quarter, which equates to a mere 4% of the nearly 2.4 million vehicles manufactured by Toyota. The Japanese automaker builds its global brand on affordability, reliability, and highly efficient large-scale manufacturing techniques that Tesla has yet to replicate.
Toyota currently faces significant headwinds as it navigates the global pandemic and its late transition to fully electric vehicles after heavily wagering on hydrogen fuel cells. The legacy automaker forecasts an 80% plunge in profit this year and anticipates a slow market recovery. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to break traditional industry rules by selling cars directly online and assembling vehicles in high-cost California, a strategy that ultimately rewards the company with a valuation more than double that of Volkswagen.
