Tesla Reports Lower Q1 Deliveries Amid International Expansion Challenges

Tesla releases its Q1 2019 production and delivery numbers, showing 77,100 vehicles produced and 63,000 delivered. These figures represent a significant decline compared to the previous quarter's record numbers, but they still reflect a 110% year-over-year increase in deliveries. The Model 3 accounts for the vast majority of this activity, with 50,900 deliveries and 62,950 units produced.
The company attributes the quarter-to-quarter drop primarily to logistical challenges associated with launching the Model 3 in Europe and China. Delivery volumes in these new markets frequently exceed five times the prior peak levels, creating unexpected bottlenecks that push many sales into the next quarter. As a result, Tesla ends the quarter with 10,600 vehicles still in transit to customers globally.
Tesla warns that the lower than expected delivery volumes and recent pricing adjustments negatively impact its expected Q1 net income. However, the automaker maintains it has sufficient cash on hand and highlights that the Model 3 remains the best-selling mid-sized premium sedan in North America, outselling its closest competitor by sixty percent.
