Tesla launches its Navigate on Autopilot feature across North America tonight, bringing its most advanced Autopilot capability to drivers. The system actively guides a vehicle from a highway's on-ramp to its off-ramp, suggesting lane changes, navigating interchanges, and taking the correct exits to follow the most efficient route.
Drivers remain responsible for supervising the vehicle and must manually confirm any lane changes suggested by the car. The feature includes four different speed settings for lane changes ranging from Disabled to "Mad Max," allowing users to customize how aggressively the system moves through traffic.
This release marks a significant step toward Tesla's goal of full self-driving capability. Future updates plan to allow drivers to waive the lane change confirmation requirement once the system logs around 10 million miles and proves its safety, a transition that an upcoming AI chip ultimately makes possible.
