Tesla unveils the Model Y, a new electric crossover SUV priced between $39,000 and $60,000 depending on the configuration. CEO Elon Musk reveals the prototype at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, California, showcasing a vehicle that is about 10 percent larger than the Model 3. The Model Y seats seven passengers and includes a panoramic glass roof along with 66 cubic feet of cargo space.
The company plans to produce four distinct versions of the SUV, offering varying ranges and price points. The standard-range model starts at $39,000 with 230 miles of range and arrives in spring 2021, while the long-range, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and performance versions cost up to $60,000 and deliver in fall 2020. This new release allows Tesla to tap into the strong and ongoing consumer demand for sport utility vehicles in the United States.
To keep manufacturing costs down, the Model Y shares approximately 75 percent of its components with the existing Model 3 sedan. This high level of parts sharing represents a significant improvement over the Model X, which only achieved a 30 percent parts overlap with the Model S despite initial goals. By utilizing shared components and assembly strategies, Tesla aims to produce the Model Y more efficiently and avoid the production hurdles of its past vehicle launches.
