Tesla Unveils Next-Gen Emergency Braking for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Tesla showcases an upcoming upgrade to its automated emergency braking system that detects and stops for pedestrians and cyclists. The announcement coincides with the Tesla Model 3 achieving a record safety score from Euro NCAP.

Tesla reveals a significant upgrade to its automated emergency braking (AEB) system that now actively detects and stops for pedestrians and cyclists. The automaker demonstrates this next-generation technology in real-world scenarios on its official Twitter account, showing the vehicle successfully applying the brakes to avoid collisions with vulnerable road users.

While automated braking for pedestrians is not a completely new concept, with Volvo introducing similar features a decade ago, Tesla relies on its advanced Autopilot sensors and in-house AI processors to power the system. This underlying computing technology theoretically allows the vehicle to process environmental data more effectively than traditional systems to prevent accidents.

Tesla shares this demonstration as part of a celebration of the Tesla Model 3 earning the highest Safety Assist score ever awarded by Euro NCAP under their 2018/2019 assessment protocols. The upgraded AEB system is available to all Tesla vehicles, even for owners who do not purchase the full Autopilot cruise-assist upgrade.
