Elon Musk unveils a prototype of the Tesla Robovan at the We, Robot event in Los Angeles, presenting an electric, autonomous vehicle roughly the size of a bus. The vehicle is designed to transport up to 20 people or carry goods through high-density areas, rolling onto the stage without a steering wheel. Despite Musk's confident declaration that Tesla will build the Robovan exactly as it appears, he offers no concrete details regarding production costs, manufacturing plans, or a release date.
The Robovan features a distinct retro-futuristic aesthetic that resembles a blend of a 1950s toaster and a bus from The Jetsons. It boasts silver metallic sides, black detailing, illuminated ground strips, and sliding middle doors, while the interior provides seating and standing room behind tinted windows. Musk expresses a desire to change the look of the roads, stating that the future should look like the future, much like the company's approach with the Cybertruck.
This large-scale robotaxi shares similarities with purpose-built autonomous vehicles from Zoox, Cruise, and WeRide, but it stands out due to its significantly larger size. The existence of the Robovan aligns with a vague teaser from Tesla's 2023 Investor Day, where a larger vehicle was hinted at alongside the goal of producing 20 million vehicles per year by 2030.
