Tesla's Full Self-Driving Price Drops Significantly After Years of Steady Increases

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) package experiences a significant price drop in April 2024, falling to $8,000 after peaking at $15,000 in September 2022. This current price marks a notable shift for the automaker, which steadily increases the cost of the advanced driver assistance system since revamping its offerings in April 2019. At that time, lucky early adopters purchase the add-on for just $5,000 before Tesla initiates a series of regular price hikes.
The upward pricing trend continues for several years, with Tesla raising the cost of FSD to $6,000 in May 2019 and eventually doubling it to $10,000 by October 2020. In January 2022, the price jumps to $12,000, and CEO Elon Musk warns consumers on social media that the cost will rise even further. Following the wide release of FSD Beta 10.69.2, Tesla increases the price to $15,000 in North America in September 2022, while also bringing back Enhanced Autopilot as a separate $6,000 option.
Despite Musk's previous warnings and his public statements about the life-saving potential of Tesla's artificial intelligence breakthroughs, the company begins lowering the FSD price in September 2023. The cost drops from its $15,000 peak back down to $12,000 late last year, and now falls another $4,000 to reach the current $8,000 price point. Before the 2019 reorganization, customers actually pay more for FSD because it requires a $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot purchase plus an additional $3,000 to $5,000 for the self-driving features.
