Thai Retail Giant Central Group Pours $200 Million Into Grab

Southeast Asian ride-hailing leader Grab secures $200 million from Thai retail conglomerate Central Group to strengthen its local operations and fend off rival Go-Jek.

Southeast Asian ride-hailing company Grab raises $200 million from Central Group, a massive retail conglomerate based in Thailand. This unique investment targets Grab's Thailand-specific business unit rather than its broader ongoing Series H funding round. Central Group operates over 30 malls, numerous restaurants, and hotels in Thailand, with public holding companies valued at more than $15 billion.

The partnership integrates Grab's services directly into Central's extensive offline network across Thailand. Central plans to add its restaurants to the Grab Food platform, bring Grab transportation options to its physical malls, and utilize Grab's logistics network for its retail operations. This strategic alliance aims to solidify Grab's dominance in Thailand, a crucial market of 70 million consumers that faces increasing competition from Indonesian rival Go-Jek.

Grab continues to aggressively expand its overall fundraising efforts beyond this single-country deal. The company pushes forward with its $3 billion Series H round, backed by major players like Toyota, Microsoft, and Booking Holdings, while targeting a monumental $5 billion total raise with additional capital expected from SoftBank's Vision Fund. To date, Grab accumulates $6.8 billion in total funding, securing its position as Southeast Asia's most heavily capitalized startup.
