However, the judge hands down a 155-month sentence that falls directly within the same 135 to 168-month guideline range calculated for Holmes.
The trial features damning evidence that directly links Balwani to the company's deceptive practices, including a text message to Holmes stating he is responsible for everything at Theranos. Prosecutors focus heavily on the deployment of the startup's faulty technology into 41 Walgreens stores. Originally, Holmes and Balwani face a joint trial, but the judge grants Holmes a separate proceeding after she claims Balwani emotionally and psychologically abused her during their romantic relationship.
