Top Robotics Firms Sign Pledge to Keep Advanced Robots Weapon-Free
Six major robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, promise to never weaponize their general-purpose robots or allow customers to do so. The open letter highlights serious ethical risks while distinguishing these commercial machines from existing government defense technologies.
Boston Dynamics and five other leading robotics companies sign an open letter pledging not to weaponize their advanced general-purpose robots. The signatories, which include Agility Robotics, ANYbotics, Clearpath Robotics, Open Robotics, and Unitree, acknowledge that while their technology offers immense benefits for work and home environments, untrustworthy individuals could easily misuse it to invade civil rights or intimidate people.
The companies explicitly promise to avoid attaching weapons to their remotely or autonomously operated machines. Furthermore, they commit to actively preventing their own customers from weaponizing the robots or the underlying software, citing new risks of harm and serious ethical issues that arise when these highly mobile devices enter spaces where people live and work.
This voluntary pledge deliberately excludes existing government defense technologies used to uphold laws, drawing a clear line between specialized military equipment and commercial robots like the dog-like Spot. The announcement aligns with a growing global push to curb autonomous weapons, as the Stop Killer Robots campaign reports that nearly 100 countries and a majority of the public currently oppose such systems.
