Transit Giant Via Acquires City Mapping Startup Remix for $100 Million
Transportation software company Via is purchasing city planning platform Remix for $100 million to create a comprehensive end-to-end transit solution. The deal brings together Remix's planning expertise and Via's operational technology for a combined base of hundreds of global government partners.
Transit software company Via acquires city mapping startup Remix for $100 million in a cash and equity deal. Remix, which originally started as a hackathon project during a Code for America fellowship, currently provides transportation planning and street design software to more than 350 local governments across 22 countries. Under the terms of the acquisition, Remix operates as an independent subsidiary and retains its core leadership team, including CEO Tiffany Chu and CTO Dan Getelman.
This strategic combination allows the two companies to offer a complete end-to-end transit solution. Remix contributes its deep strengths in transportation planning, while Via brings extensive expertise in software and daily operations. Chu notes that this partnership enables them to seamlessly carry a transit project from its initial planning stages all the way through to actual deployment, a capability neither company achieves effectively on its own.
Via originally launches in 2012 as an on-demand shuttle operator but now focuses entirely on providing a software and operations platform for cities and transit authorities. With a valuation of $2.25 billion following a massive Series E funding round, Via currently partners with 200 transit agencies in 24 countries to manage on-demand shuttles, fixed-route transit, paratransit, and school bus systems.
