Trump Administration Lifts Export Restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable Models
The U.S. government lifts export restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models, allowing the AI lab to restore public access starting July 1. The restrictions, imposed on June 12, require Anthropic to obtain a license before sharing the models with foreign nationals. Complying with that rule at scale proves impractical, forcing Anthropic to cut off public access to what many consider the most advanced AI models available today.
After weeks of negotiations, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announces that Anthropic agrees to proactively detect security risks, cooperate with the government on release protocols, and report any malicious activity. However, Anthropic has already pledged to do much of this voluntarily before the restrictions even exist. Cybersecurity experts view the original ban as political leverage rather than a genuine security measure, noting it appears to punish Anthropic for executives' public criticism of the administration.
The reversal also comes as Asian AI companies release models approaching Mythos-level capabilities, increasing pressure on the U.S. to ensure American AI remains globally competitive. Meanwhile, the Trump administration's inconsistent approach to AI policymaking leaves the industry uncertain about what rules will govern future releases. Lutnick recently clears Mythos for select White House-approved customers, and OpenAI's latest models receive similar restricted treatment, raising ongoing questions about transparency and access.
