Twitter Expands Rules to Directly Ban Financial Scams

Twitter introduces a new policy that explicitly prohibits financial scams, targeting schemes like crypto fraud and phishing. Violators face permanent suspension from the platform.

Twitter expands its platform policies to explicitly ban financial scams, an issue that previously lacked direct documentation. Until now, the company handles these schemes through a general spam reporting tool, but the new rules clearly state that users cannot create accounts or send messages designed to obtain money or private financial information.

The updated policy specifically targets various deceptive tactics, including relationship-building scams, money-flipping schemes, fraudulent discounts, and phishing attempts. This change arrives as Twitter faces heavy criticism for allowing cryptocurrency scams to proliferate and for accidentally promoting a PayPal phishing tweet earlier this year.

Users still report suspicious activity by clicking the menu and selecting the appropriate spam options, but scammers now risk permanent suspension for violating these financial rules. However, Twitter clarifies that it does not intervene in standard business disputes, such as complaints about poor-quality goods or disputed refunds.
