Thousands of Twitter users encounter error messages when trying to access the platform as Elon Musk implements strict new daily reading limits. Musk states that these temporary restrictions aim to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation on the social media site. Over 7,000 people report outages to Downdetector, receiving messages that their rate limit is exceeded or that tweets cannot be retrieved.
The new system establishes different viewing thresholds based on account verification status. Verified accounts initially face a 6,000-post daily limit before Musk increases it to 10,000 posts. Unverified accounts see their access capped at 600 posts per day, while brand new unverified users only get 300 posts per day.
This disruption represents the latest in a series of technical difficulties for the platform since Musk takes over late last year. Previous outages prevent users from posting, clicking links, or loading images, often coinciding with major operational changes like data center closures and massive layoffs. The company responds to media requests for comment about the current situation with its customary poop emoji.
