Twitter Surpasses $1 Billion in Q4 Revenue Amid Profit Decline

Twitter reaches a major revenue milestone by breaking the billion-dollar mark in Q4, driven by strong ad sales, despite a significant drop in net income compared to the previous year. The company plans heavy investments in engineering and headcount growth moving forward.

Twitter reports mixed Q4 earnings as it crosses the billion-dollar revenue threshold for the first time, generating $1.01 billion largely due to strong advertising sales. This financial milestone provides a brighter outlook after a troubled Q3, where costly advertising glitches caused the company to miss both revenue and earnings targets.

Despite the record revenue, Twitter experiences a significant drop in profitability, with net income falling to $119 million and diluted EPS dropping to $0.15 compared to the same period a year prior. The company explains that a large income tax benefit in the previous year makes the year-over-year decline appear steeper than the underlying operational reality.

Looking ahead, Twitter forecasts a challenging Q1 with revenues expected between $825 million and $885 million and operating income dropping to as low as zero. This cautious guidance stems from aggressive plans to grow headcount by at least 20 percent and significantly increase investments in engineering, product, design, and research.
