Medical researchers at West Virginia University's Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute are launching the first U.S. clinical trial to combat severe opioid addiction using an implanted brain chip. The team successfully places a deep brain simulation (DBS) device inside a 33-year-old patient, marking a major step in addressing an ongoing health crisis that hits West Virginia harder than any other state.
The DBS device works by attaching tiny electrodes to brain areas linked to addiction and self-control. As the patient experiences cravings, the chip monitors these impulses in real time and intervenes to curb the urge, while simultaneously collecting valuable data for researchers studying treatment-resistant cases.
This high-tech approach serves strictly as a last resort for patients who fail to respond to traditional addiction treatments. The initial trial focuses on just four participants who have already exhausted other recovery options, building on the team's prior success using DBS to treat FDA-approved conditions like epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
