Uber Rolls Out Rider Loyalty Program With Tiers and Upgrades

Uber launches its new Rewards loyalty program in 25 U.S. cities, offering perks like free upgrades and price protection based on user spending over the last six months.

Uber rolls out its new rider loyalty program, Uber Rewards, to 25 cities across the United States. The feature automatically calculates how much users spend on rides and Uber Eats over the last six months to determine their status tier. Riders simply check the bottom of their app's home screen for an invitation to activate the program and lock in their perks for the next half-year.

The loyalty system offers powerful incentives that scale with spending, including no-fee cancellations upon rebooking and free car upgrades. Users earn points at different rates depending on the service level, receiving one point per dollar on UberPool and Eats, two points on standard rides, and three points on premium Black vehicles. Accumulating 500 points grants a $5 rebate, while Platinum members receive guaranteed pricing between two favorite locations that they configure themselves.

This strategic launch gives Uber a significant edge as primary competitor Lyft still delays the launch of its own promised rewards system. Although Uber is not the first ride-hailing company to introduce loyalty perks, its deep pockets and slick product design help it stand out in a crowded market. By rewarding heavy spenders with valuable, automatic benefits, the program strongly discourages users from checking other apps when Uber prices or wait times seem high.
