Udacity and Mercedes-Benz Launch Sensor Fusion Program for AV Engineers

Udacity and Mercedes-Benz's North American R&D lab team up to launch a new sensor fusion nanodegree designed to meet the growing demand for specialized autonomous vehicle engineers. The four-month program consists of four courses that teach students how to work with lidar, radar, and cameras, which are the primary sensors used in self-driving cars. Enrollment for the program opens as companies actively seek talent with these specific technical skills.

The curriculum focuses on critical AV technologies such as lidar obstacle detection, radar obstacle detection, camera and lidar data fusion, and Kalman Filters. Udacity co-founder Sebastian Thrun emphasizes that companies are no longer looking for self-driving car generalists, but rather specialists in highly sought-after areas like sensor fusion. This targeted approach reflects a broader turnaround strategy at Udacity to align its educational offerings with direct industry needs.

Despite the autonomous vehicle industry experiencing a period of disillusionment among investors, Thrun notes that the job market for skilled AV engineers remains incredibly strong. Major companies like Zoox, Aurora, Waymo, Cruise, and Tesla continue to hire aggressively, making it easier for qualified workers to find jobs than for startups to raise funding. This new program builds on the previous success of a 2016 self-driving car engineer collaboration between Udacity and Mercedes-Benz, which attracted thousands of students.
