The UK and the US sign a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on developing tests for the most advanced AI models. This agreement follows commitments made at the AI Safety Summit last November and involves Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The partnership takes effect immediately to ensure both nations align their scientific approaches and accelerate robust evaluations for AI systems.
Under this new agreement, the UK and US AI Safety Institutes plan to build a common approach to AI safety testing and share their capabilities. They intend to perform at least one joint testing exercise on a publicly accessible model. Additionally, the institutes explore personnel exchanges to tap into a collective pool of expertise and work seamlessly with one another.
Both governments recognize the need to act now as AI continues to develop rapidly and presents emerging risks. As they strengthen their bilateral partnership on AI safety, the UK and the US also commit to developing similar partnerships with other countries. This global outreach aims to promote AI safety across the world and keep pace with the defining technology challenge of this generation.
