The U.K. government bans all new Huawei equipment from its 5G telecom networks starting in 2021 and requires the complete removal of existing Huawei gear by 2027. This major policy reversal stems directly from U.S. sanctions imposed in May that restrict Huawei's access to American technology. Following these sanctions, the U.K.'s National Cybersecurity Centre conducts a review and concludes it can no longer guarantee the security of future Huawei hardware, prompting the government to abandon its previous compromise.
The ban marks a significant victory for the Trump Administration, which spends years pressuring allies to exclude Huawei over espionage concerns. Although British officials admit that removing the Chinese tech company's hardware slows down the country's 5G rollout, they stress that the decision is absolutely vital for national security.
