The British Ministry of Defence is currently managing over 400 artificial intelligence projects as part of a major modernization effort. Defence Minister Lord Coaker reveals that AI and the autonomy it enables has the potential to transform every aspect of the armed forces, making the rapid adoption of these technologies a top priority for the department.
A central hub called the Defence AI Centre coordinates these extensive efforts by bringing together Defence Digital, Defence Equipment and Support, and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. This collaborative partnership focuses on delivering secure and responsible AI adoption, with scientists developing the necessary standards, tooling, and evaluation capabilities to use AI-enabled systems safely.
This massive investment in AI aligns with broader defence procurement reforms announced in the recent Spring Statement. The Ministry is committing to spend at least ten percent of its equipment budget on novel technologies to ensure the UK military maintains a critical operational edge in an increasingly competitive global security environment.
