UK Startup Wayve Secures $1.05 Billion to Expand AI Self-Driving Tech
Wayve raises a record-breaking $1.05 billion led by SoftBank to advance its self-learning autonomous driving system. The company plans to sell its hardware-agnostic AI platform to various automakers and robotics firms globally.
U.K. startup Wayve closes a massive $1.05 billion Series C funding round led by SoftBank, with additional participation from Nvidia and Microsoft. This investment marks the largest AI fundraise in U.K. history and ranks among the top 20 globally. Wayve plans to use this capital to develop both assisted and fully automated driving features, while also expanding its global operations.
Unlike rule-based systems, Wayve utilizes an end-to-end, self-learning approach that is hardware-agnostic and mapless. The company trains its AI models using real-world driving data, initially starting on the narrow streets of Cambridge and later expanding through partnerships with commercial delivery fleets like Ocado. By selling this technology to various original equipment manufacturers rather than relying on a single car brand, Wayve gathers a diverse range of data to improve its system.
Beyond traditional vehicles, Wayve brands its technology as "Embodied AI" and intends to deploy it across multiple robotics applications. The company's advanced multimodal and generative models, known as LINGO and GAIA, promise to deliver language-responsive interfaces and personalized driving styles. CEO Alex Kendall notes that recent advancements in surrounding-car camera technology finally allow their long-term vision to function effectively in the real world.
