Ukraine Digital Minister Urges US Tech Giants to Block Russian Access
Ukraine's digital minister calls on major US technology companies to restrict services and block state-backed propaganda in an effort to disrupt Russia's invasion.
Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, publicly calls on major US technology companies to take decisive action against Russia amid the ongoing invasion. He sends formal letters to the leaders of YouTube, Meta, Apple, and Netflix, urging them to restrict access to their platforms for Russian citizens and block Kremlin-backed media channels.
In his appeal to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, Fedorov requests the immediate removal of Russian propaganda outlets like Russia 24, TASS, and RIA Novosti. He simultaneously asks Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to block Russian citizens from accessing Facebook and Instagram, arguing that depriving the public of these services motivates young and proactive Russians to oppose their government's military aggression.
Fedorov applies similar pressure to Apple and Netflix by demanding restrictions on the App Store and the blocking of Russian content. These unprecedented requests represent a strategic shift for Ukraine's digital ministry, moving from building domestic government apps to actively urging Western tech leaders to weaponize their platforms in order to disrupt the invasion and increase internal awareness of the conflict.
