Unreal Engine 5 Demo Reveals the Future of PS5 Gameplay
Epic Games unveils Unreal Engine 5 running in real time on the PS5, showcasing dynamic lighting and highly detailed environments. The tech demo highlights tools designed to eliminate loading screens and static worlds in next-generation gaming.
Epic Games reveals a first real look at next-gen gameplay with the unveiling of Unreal Engine 5 during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. This impressive tech demo runs entirely in real time on a PS5, offering a replayable and slightly dynamic experience that shows exactly what the upcoming console can handle.
Although the Unreal Engine 5 does not arrive until 2021, its suite of tools provides a clear window into the future of next-generation gaming. Epic CTO Kim Libreri explains that the central theme moves away from pre-canned static environments to fully destructible, editable worlds with dynamic lighting and movie-quality details.
The demo highlights two major new features: the Lumen dynamic lighting system and the Nanite polygon rendering system. Lumen eliminates the need for pre-baked lighting by providing fully reactive global illumination, while Nanite allows developers to import and render incredibly high-polygon models and textures without traditional performance bottlenecks.
