US Blocks China From Accessing Next-Generation Chip Design Software
The US restricts China's access to advanced EDA software needed for 3nm and smaller chips, aiming to slow the country's semiconductor progress. While the immediate impact remains limited, the move targets critical technology for future chip development.
The US Bureau of Industry and Security announces a new ban on exporting specific semiconductor technology to China, targeting advanced electronics design automation (EDA) software used for creating 3nm and smaller chips. This restriction focuses on software designed for gate-all-around field effect transistor (GAAFET) technology, which enables microchips to achieve higher frequencies and lower power consumption.
Major global manufacturers like Samsung, Intel, and TSMC rely on this next-generation technology, which also serves as a crucial component for producing upcoming 2nm chips. Analysts note that while this export control imposes limited immediate effects on China, it ultimately restrains the country's long-term development in advanced chipmaking capabilities.
Foreign companies currently dominate 77% of the Chinese EDA market, but domestic firms like Primarius Technologies are actively working to fill the gap. Primarius claims it already possesses core tools capable of supporting advanced process nodes such as 7nm, 5nm, and 3nm, suggesting a growing local push to counteract these new US restrictions.
