Valve Launches Steam Labs to Test Experimental Game Discovery Features
Valve introduces Steam Labs, a new space where users can test and provide feedback on experimental features before they officially launch. The initial batch of experiments focuses entirely on helping players discover new games.
Valve unveils Steam Labs, a new initiative that gives users an early look at experimental features that may or may not make it into the official Steam client. This new approach pulls back the curtain on the company's usually secret development process, allowing players to interact with prototypes and provide valuable feedback before the ideas are fully baked.
The first three experiments focus heavily on game discovery. Micro Trailers play six-second looping videos when users hover over a game, while the Interactive Recommender uses playtime data to suggest new titles with an option to filter out popular games. Additionally, the Automatic Show functions like a generated shopping channel, displaying footage of the latest releases over music.
Valve emphasizes that Steam Labs is itself an experiment and makes no guarantees that any of these features will permanently join the official platform. The company sets up a dedicated forum for users to share their thoughts and suggestions on the current prototypes, ensuring community feedback directly shapes the future of the store.
