Verizon Pixel 5 Gains Wider 5G Network Access in November Update
A delayed November software update finally enables the Pixel 5 on Verizon to connect to the carrier's broader 5G Nationwide network. The expansion moves users beyond the limited mmWave coverage to reach over 200 million people.
A delayed November security patch for the Verizon Pixel 5 rolls out today and brings a highly anticipated connectivity upgrade. Unlike other unlocked and carrier models that received their updates earlier in the month, this specific Verizon release adds support for the carrier's 5G Nationwide network.
Previously, the Pixel 5 only connects to Verizon's ultra-fast but extremely limited mmWave network, which requires users to stand near specific street corners, airports, or stadiums. With this new update, the phone uses Dynamic Spectrum Sharing to stay on 5G technology using lower spectrum bands when users move outside the high-band Ultra Wideband coverage areas.
While the Sub-6 5G Nationwide speeds feel similar to 4G LTE in everyday use, the coverage expands massively to over 1,800 cities and more than 200 million people. Verizon users see a dedicated 5G icon in their status bar when connected to this broader network, which operates simultaneously with 4G LTE on multiple spectrum bands.
