The artificial intelligence tool allows anyone to type absurd prompts, such as a Roomba cleaning the Mariana Trench or Voldemort playing in a band, and it instantly produces a corresponding image.
The tool gains massive popularity on social media as users combine recognizable pop culture icons with ridiculous scenarios to create bizarre memes. Texas-based computer engineer Boris Dayma creates the program as an entry in a coding competition, drawing inspiration from OpenAI's powerful DALL-E system. Unlike the restricted original model, Dayma makes his version accessible to everyone online, and through community feedback on GitHub and Twitter, the tool improves rapidly until it reaches a viral threshold. He later renames the project to Craiyon at OpenAI's request.
