Virgin Hyperloop achieves a major milestone by completing its first passenger test run at a Nevada desert site. Two employees ride in a two-person pod that travels 500 meters in just 15 seconds, reaching speeds that demonstrate the potential of this vacuum-tube transit system. This marks the first time people travel on the technology since Elon Musk first proposes the concept in 2012.

The transport system uses magnetic levitation to move pods through a low-pressure tube, eliminating air resistance and allowing for incredible speeds. Virgin claims the Hyperloop eventually reaches top speeds of 620 miles per hour, which enables a 45-minute trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The company also emphasizes that the technology produces zero carbon emissions, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to short-haul flights.

Despite the successful test, experts continue to express safety concerns regarding the extreme velocities and enclosed nature of the tubes. Virgin addresses these worries by planning a certification center and test track in West Virginia to rigorously evaluate passenger safety. Backed by over $400 million in funding, Virgin develops larger pods that hold up to 28 passengers as it works to bring this futuristic travel method to the public.
