Walmart Launches Premium Express Grocery Delivery to Cut Pandemic Wait Times
Walmart introduces a new "Express" grocery delivery service that allows customers to pay a $10 premium to skip long lines and receive their orders in two hours or less. The service responds to massive pandemic-driven demand that leaves standard delivery slots booked out for days.
Record numbers of shoppers turn to grocery delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to severe delays and completely booked time slots. Walmart addresses this overwhelming demand by launching a new premium service called "Express," which allows customers to pay an extra $10 on top of standard delivery fees to skip to the front of the line.
The Express service guarantees grocery delivery in two hours or less, though pilot tests show the average delivery time actually drops to just 56 minutes. Customers simply add at least $30 worth of items from over 160,000 available products to their online cart and select the Express option at checkout when standard slots are unavailable.
Walmart begins piloting this program across 100 U.S. stores in mid-April and plans a rapid expansion to nearly 2,000 locations in the coming weeks. The retailer relies on its existing network of third-party delivery partners to fulfill these expedited orders as consumers demonstrate a clear willingness to pay extra for immediate convenience during the crisis.
