Waymo Via is transporting freight for J.B. Hunt along a busy Texas corridor to test its Level 4 autonomous driving technology. The pilot program aims to develop a long-term plan for autonomous trucking operations.
Waymo Via and J.B. Hunt Transport Services are teaming up for a test run that moves freight along Interstate 45 between Houston and Fort Worth, Texas. The trucks use the Waymo Driver autonomous platform, though each vehicle carries a commercially licensed driver, a software technician, and an autonomous specialist to monitor operations closely.
This collaboration builds on a longstanding relationship where both companies study operational best practices, facility layouts, and ideal driving lanes for autonomous technology. Waymo keeps the exact number of trucks in this limited-duration pilot confidential, but states the primary goal is to develop a long-term operational plan together.
The Waymo Driver operates as a Level 4 platform, meaning it drives itself without human intervention under specific conditions like clear weather. Beyond this J.B. Hunt partnership, Waymo continues to expand its commercial reach by integrating its technology into Daimler Trucks freightliners, Volvo electric robotaxis, and Fiat Chrysler cargo vans.
