Waymo CEO John Krafcik Steps Down, Names Two Co-CEOs
John Krafcik departs as CEO of Waymo after five and a half years, handing control to co-CEOs Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov. Krafcik remains with the company as an advisor while the autonomous driving division continues to expand its ride-hailing and delivery services.
John Krafcik steps down from his role as CEO of Waymo after five and a half years of leading the autonomous vehicle company. He describes his time at the helm as the capstone of his career and plans to take a refresh period to reconnect with family and travel. Although he leaves his daily leadership duties, he stays with the company as an advisor.
Waymo appoints Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov as co-CEOs to replace Krafcik. The two leaders bring complementary skills from their recent roles as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer. They already work closely together and receive full support from Krafcik, the Waymo board, and Alphabet leadership.
Under Krafcik's leadership, Waymo achieves significant milestones, including driving tens of millions of autonomous miles on public roads and completing over 20 billion simulation miles. The company launches the Waymo One ride-hailing service, expands the Waymo Via delivery product, raises $3.25 billion in external funding, and establishes itself as an independent Alphabet subsidiary.
