Waymo Expands Driverless Taxi Fleet With New Retail Partnerships
Waymo grows its fully driverless "early rider program" in Arizona by partnering with major brands like Walmart and Avis. The expansion focuses on providing autonomous rides for everyday errands like grocery shopping and car rentals.
Waymo accelerates its autonomous driving efforts by expanding its fully driverless taxi service in Arizona. Using Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans, the company operates these advanced vehicles on public roads without anyone in the driver's seat. After eight years of development, Waymo focuses on making this self-driving technology a practical reality for everyday residents.
The company builds on its early rider program by forming strategic partnerships with major brands like Walmart, Avis, and AutoNation. Waymo tailors these collaborations to meet the most common rider needs, which include running errands, grocery shopping, commuting, and handling car maintenance. For example, Waymo transports riders to and from Walmart to pick up online grocery orders, saving them time and effort.
Additional partnerships allow Phoenix-area hotel guests to request autonomous rides, while AutoNation offers a Waymo vehicle instead of a traditional loaner car during servicing. Avis also integrates Waymo into its rental service to provide last-mile transportation solutions for customers. As these services grow, Waymo plans to expand its operational area to a zone larger than Greater London and add more driverless vehicles to its fleet.
