With over 3,700 vehicles in its fleet, Waymo provides 500,000 paid rides every week.
The company traces its origins back to the Stanford Racing Team, which competes in the DARPA Grand Challenges in 2005 and 2007. Google officially begins developing this self-driving technology in January 2009 and reveals the project to the public in October 2010. In December 2016, the initiative spins out of Google, takes on the Waymo name, and becomes a standalone business unit under the Alphabet corporate umbrella.
Waymo reaches a major industry milestone in October 2020 by becoming the first company to offer fully driverless ride-hailing services to the general public. Today, the vehicles log an impressive 200 million fully autonomous miles. Under the leadership of co-CEOs Dmitri Dolgov and Tekedra Mawakana, the company employs 2,500 people and continues to expand its transportation network across the United States.
