Waymo Partners with Jaguar to Add 20,000 All-Electric I-Pace SUVs to Fleet
Waymo expands its autonomous ride-hailing fleet by adding 20,000 all-electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles over the next few years. The new premium SUVs offer a fully electric alternative to the company's existing Chrysler Pacifica hybrids.
Waymo unveils the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace as the newest vehicle to join its self-driving fleet. The company plans to add 20,000 of these premium SUVs over the next few years to support its existing test fleets and upcoming commercial ride-hailing services, which launch later this year in Phoenix. Waymo states that a fleet of this size completes a million rides in a single day.
This partnership provides a new form factor for Waymo passengers who currently ride in Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vans. The autonomous technology remains the same, but riders now experience a fully electric, premium SUV rather than a plug-in hybrid van. This shift to a completely battery-electric platform represents a positive step forward for Waymo's environmental impact.
The deal also significantly boosts Jaguar Land Rover's position in the self-driving space, as the smaller automaker lacks the extensive autonomous programs of major competitors. Jaguar reserves a substantial portion of its I-Pace production capacity for Waymo, with both CEOs praising the partnership as a way to deliver a safe, premium, and eco-friendly mobility experience.
