Waymo Raises $16 Billion at $126 Billion Valuation to Fuel Global Robotaxi Expansion
Alphabet's self-driving unit Waymo secures a massive $16 billion funding round, more than doubling its valuation to $126 billion as it shifts from proving a concept to scaling globally.
Waymo secures a $16 billion funding round that values the self-driving car unit at $126 billion, marking a massive increase from its $45 billion valuation in late 2024. Alphabet leads the round as the majority investor, with major firms like Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Silver Lake also participating. The co-CEOs emphasize that the company is no longer proving a concept but is actively scaling a commercial reality built on safety standards that they claim are statistically superior to human driving.
The new capital gives Waymo the resources to accelerate its expansion with unprecedented velocity across the United States and internationally. The robotaxi service currently operates in six major markets, including Austin, San Francisco, and Miami, and it completes 15 million trips in 2025. Throughout 2026, Waymo plans to launch in major cities like Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, and Washington, while also expanding to London as its first international market.
Despite this rapid growth and financial success, Waymo faces operational challenges as it scales its fleet. The company recently issues a software recall after Texas officials report that its robotaxis illegally pass school buses at least 19 times during the school year. These incidents highlight the ongoing regulatory and safety hurdles the autonomous vehicle industry navigates as it transitions from testing phases to widespread public deployment.
