Waymo Secures $2.5 Billion to Expand Autonomous Driving Operations
Waymo raises a massive $2.5 billion investment round led by Alphabet and major financial firms to scale its self-driving technology. The company plans to use the funds to advance its Waymo Driver and expand its ride-hailing and freight services.
Waymo announces a new $2.5 billion investment round, drawing financial backing from Alphabet, Andreessen Horowitz, Silver Lake, and several other major institutional investors. The company intends to use this significant capital injection to continue developing the Waymo Driver and to expand its overall workforce. This strong financial support reflects growing confidence in the company's ability to commercialize fully autonomous technology.
The autonomous vehicle developer currently boasts tens of millions of miles driven on public roads across 25 U.S. cities, alongside tens of billions of simulated miles. Waymo operates the first fully autonomous public ride-hailing service, Waymo One, which completes thousands of rider-only trips in Metro Phoenix. Additionally, the company currently navigates the busy streets of San Francisco using a growing fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles.
Beyond passenger transport, Waymo expands its commercial reach through its Waymo Via delivery and freight division. The company partners with major logistics brands like J.B. Hunt, UPS, and AutoNation to move goods locally and across the country using Class 8 trucks. Despite the immense artificial intelligence challenges associated with scaling autonomous driving, Waymo relies on its talented team to safely transport riders and freight every day.
