Waymo Secures $2.5 Billion to Expand Autonomous Rideshare Operations

Alphabet-led investment brings Waymo's total recent funding to nearly $6 billion as it competes with Cruise to launch paid driverless rides in San Francisco.

Autonomous driving company Waymo secures an additional $2.5 billion in funding, an investment round led by its parent company Alphabet alongside existing shareholders. This new capital injection gives Waymo a war chest of nearly $6 billion in total recent funding. The announcement comes just one day after rival Cruise obtains a $5 billion line of credit from General Motors, highlighting the fierce financial competition in the self-driving sector.

Waymo plans to use this fresh capital to hire more staff and advance its self-driving technology toward providing more paid rides. The company currently charges for driverless rides in Chandler, Arizona, and actively prepares to launch a similar paid service in San Francisco. To operate in California, Waymo awaits permit approvals from both the California DMV and the California Public Utilities Commission, having already logged over 83,000 autonomous miles in the city.

Despite facing delays from the COVID-19 pandemic and regulatory hurdles, Waymo shows strong investor confidence through this massive financial backing. However, the primary challenge for the company remains developing safe and dependable full self-driving technology. While this funding signals strong belief in the future of autonomous rideshares, genuine profitability remains a distant goal for Waymo and its competitors.
