Autonomous vehicle developer Waymo provides a virtual look at the daily testing of its self-driving trucks on public roads. During a recent live demonstration, a Class 8 tractor equipped with Waymo’s automated driving system navigates highways near the company’s Phoenix operations center. A safety driver sits behind the wheel as the truck autonomously executes lane changes and merges through moderate traffic involving passenger cars, motorcycles, and other large commercial vehicles.
The robotic Waymo Driver system relies on an array of onboard sensors to constantly monitor the truck’s surroundings. An autonomous vehicle engineer in the passenger seat uses a laptop to display exactly what the system "sees and thinks" in real time. This transparency shows how the technology processes complex driving scenarios as the truck travels down the road.
Waymo emphasizes that every mile driven, whether autonomously or manually, contributes to the continuous improvement of the driving system.
